It used to be thought that gout was caused only by lifestyle and diet, but new research has found that's not true; instead, gout is thought to have a genetic link. Long-term treatment to prevent future attacks may include medications to block the production of uric acid, such as allopurinol , or to improve your body's ability to remove uric acid from your system . If your blood uric acid level is high, a 24-hour urine collection may help your doctor find out whether your body is producing too much uric acid or your kidneys are not getting rid of enough of it. A high level of uric acid in the blood does not always mean that a person with a painful joint has gout. Testing the fluid taken from an affected joint for the presence of uric acid crystals is the only sure method to diagnose gout. The diagnosis of gout is usually confirmed when uric acid crystals are identified in a sample of a tophus or in joint fluid removed with a needle and viewed under a special microscope with polarized light.
