A combination of diet and lifestyle changes and prescription drugs — an approach called urate-lowering therapy, or ULT — is typically recommended if attacks recur or become more severe. Patients presenting with gout have high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream, this is caused by foods high in purines. The most definitive way for a doctor to make a diagnosis of gout and podagra is by taking a sample of fluid from a swollen joint to look for evidence of gout crystals in the joint.

A “stub of the toe” can lead to a gout attack if there were already enough uric acid crystals saturating the cartilage.

The human body makes uric acid during the breakdown of chemicals called purines found in certain food and drinks. This normal byproduct goes through the kidneys and exits the body when you pee. Gout leads to attacks, or flares, that appear suddenly with hot, red, or swollen joints. Sometimes the joints look like they are infected, even though they are not.
As gout can render your joints achy and feeble, subjecting them to a rigorous workout will only add to the strain and will worsen your condition. The pain and swelling of gout are caused by uric acid crystals that deposit in the joint. Uric acid is a substance that normally forms when the body breaks down waste products called purines.
