Pathophysiology And Risk Factors

The patient can suffer from chronic arthritis and develop tophi, big lumps of urate crystals, in cooler areas of the body such as the joints of the fingers. Subsequent flares may not occur for months or years, though if not treated, over time, they can last longer and occur more frequently. During this interval, further urate crystals are being deposited in tissue. This stage occurs when the urate crystals that have been deposited suddenly cause acute inflammation and intense pain.

Risk Factors

The use of diuretics by people with cardiovascular disease is another cause of the increase in gout prevalence. Gout is a painful inflammatory arthritis condition caused by deposits of uric acid crystals in the joints and soft tissues. The painful attacks often begin at night and may last for a week. Normally, uric acid is excreted from the body through the kidneys. Some people who suffer from hypothyroidism and kidney disorders are at an increased risk of developing gout. The treatments for such disorders often interfere with the body’s ability to process uric acid, not to mention that a kidney disorder can also cause problems with uric acid elimination.
