I have been asked so many times what my thoughts are on this article that I decided it was time to actually publish an official response. I’m going to address the 5 reasons provided in the article, point by point. As you can see from the table below, 100 grams of almonds contains between 1,200 – 1,400 mg of phytic acid. A handful of hazelnuts, which is further down on the list, would still exceed the recommended daily intake – and that’s assuming you’re not eating any other foods with phytic acid, which is not likely. This is because they’re more consumable, meaning they all affect your hunger signals and lead you to eat more. Our results in rat models have shown that doses as low as 1 g kg‾1 which corresponds to around 10 g/person could be effective in preventing cardiovascular disease. Tamizifar et al. showed lipid lowering effect of a relatively low almond dose (25 g/person). However, almonds were used in the form of finely grinded powder. Evidence suggests that nutrient release from grinded powder, is higher (Mandalari et al., 2008a) and whole almonds are hard to digest (Ellis et al., 2004). But there are merits of digestion-opposition by almonds, like satiety-induction which assures limited food intake thereby preventing weight-gain (Fraser et al., 2002; Wien et al., 2003).

It’s all “normal” size — which means a LOT of almonds. However, a “paleo” or “grain-free” diet that heavily relies on almond flour pancakes, waffles, cookies, breads, and brownies is also going to be high in inflammatory PUFAs. If you’re doing a lot of grain-free baking with almond flour and notice that you’re a bit backed up, try eliminating nuts, nut butters, and nut milks for a few days and see if your regularity is restored. A 2018 study suggests that people who eat nuts regularly have a lower risk of being overweight or obese and tend to gain less weight over time than those who do not eat nuts. This 5-year study looked at dietary and lifestyle data from over 373,000 people aged 25 to 70 years from 10 European countries.
