Gout Is Treatable, Preventable With Proper Diet, Medication
Content
People can talk to a doctor about their symptoms and ask for advice on which lifestyle changes might be most beneficial. Coffee does, however, increase the risk of chronic kidney disease and the likelihood of bone fractures in women, so it is important to discuss the risks and benefits with a doctor. Reaching a healthy body weight may help reduce the risk of gout flares. Obesity increases the risk of gout, especially in people of a younger age.
Is tea OK for gout?
For the risk of gout, two prospective cohort studies showed that there was no relationship between tea consumption and the risk of gout in males and females, respectively.
In older people, women are at higher risk of developing tophi than men. People who have had an organ transplant and are on the medicine cyclosporine also have a high risk of developing tophi. After several years, patients with elevated uric acid can develop deposits of uric acid called tophi. These are solid deposits of uric acid crystals that form in the joints, cartilage, bones, and elsewhere in the body. In some cases, tophi break through the skin and appear as white or yellowish-white, chalky nodules that have been described as looking like crab eyes. Gout is a metabolic disorder that causes a painful and common type of arthritis.

Anti-inflammatory steroids have long-term risks, such as bone thinning and infection, but their risk for short-term (for example, 3-7 days) therapy is relatively low. These agents can raise blood pressure and blood sugar, so can be a problem for those with uncontrolled hypertension or uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. A third type of crystal-induced arthritis, hydroxyapatite deposition disease, has a type of crystal that needs special studies for identification. In a clear-cut case, a primary care physician can make the diagnosis of gout with a high level of confidence. However, often there are two or more possible causes for an inflamed toe or other joint, which mimics some of the symptoms of gout, so tests to identify the presence of uric acid is performed. A “stub of the toe” can lead to a gout attack if there were already enough uric acid crystals saturating the cartilage.
It can also cause other side effects, such as headaches, flu-like symptoms and kidney stones. Low daily doses might be prescribed to prevent future attacks. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, can be prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation. They can increase blood sugar levels and blood pressure and may induce mood changes. Elevated uric acid levels may produce kidney problems, or none at all.
Febuxostat
A gout attack typically causes pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in a single joint, most often the big toe. Most of the time, having too much uric acid isn't harmful. Many people with high levels in their blood never get gout. But when uric acid levels in your blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints. High levels of uric acid in your body can cause several problems.
Adverse Drug Reactions12
Limit red meat intake ; consume low-fat dairy products since they are inversely associated with gout risk; and consume vegetable protein, nuts, and legumes as they are not associated with gout risk. Most mammals are able to convert uric acid to allantoin with the enzyme uricase and then easily excrete it through the kidneys. Humans and primates do not have this enzyme, but recently injectable drugs have been made available that will break down uric acid into allantoin in the blood. Physicians at Penn Rheumatology provide expert evaluation, diagnosis and advanced treatment for crystal arthropathies including gout. Uric acid deposits may form lumps under the skin called tophi.
Consumption of vegetables and low-fat or nonfat dairy products should be encouraged. The use of loop and thiazide diuretics can increase uric acid levels, whereas the use of the angiotensin receptor blocker losartan increases urinary excretion of uric acid. Reduction of uric acid levels is key to avoiding gout flares.
Drug
Allopurinol decreases uric acid production by blocking an enzyme called xanthine oxidase. It is the drug most often used in long-term gout treatment for older patients, in patients with kidney disease, and those who overproduce uric acid. A blood test may be done to measure uric acid level in the blood.

Long-term medications for gout include allopurinol and febuxostat, both of which limit uric acid production. Another effective way to reduce uric acid levels is to follow a low-purine diet. Purines are organic compounds that break down into uric acid. Following a low-purine diet means avoiding “the big four” — alcohol, shellfish, red meat, and high fructose corn syrup. There's not much good research on the side effects of febuxostat.
The following products are considered to be alternative treatments or natural remedies for Gout. Their efficacy may not have been scientifically tested to the same degree as the drugs listed in the table above. However there may be historical, cultural or anecdotal evidence linking their use to the treatment of Gout. Tophi are small, chalk-colored, stone-like deposits of uric acid that collect under the skin and are most frequently found in skin around the joints and on the outside of the ear.
