Sugar in soda typically comes in the form of high fructose corn syrup, which, like regular sugar, is linked to various health problems. Gout probably isn’t high up on the average person’s “list of health risks to watch for,” but if you drink soda, it should be. People who drink soda have a much higher risk of developing gout, a disease characterized by sudden and severe pain in the joints. During a gout attack, it is recommended you drink 16 8-ounce glasses of water daily. After the symptoms pass, you should still drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Studies have shown that regular exercise can help to improve joint function and help you to maintain a healthy weight. However, strenuous exercise can do more harm than good and dehydration may raise the level of uric acid in serum and trigger gout.

The Arthritis Research Centre of Canada also published a report in the January 2008 “British Journal of Medicine” which examined data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which followed 46,393 men for a 12-year period. This study found that men who drank two or more servings of soda containing fructose each day were 85 percent more likely to develop gout than those who rank only one serving per month, Johns Hopkins Medicine reports. Men who drank just one soda per day increased their risk by 45 percent, according to the study. Fructose-rich juices as well as fruits also increased the risk of developing gout, but diet sodas did not. Vitamin C decreases uric acid levels and can help prevent gout attacks.
While medications such as Allopurinol do prevent gout, Greenberg said, they are not necessary for all patients. In general, treatment is reserved for people who have had two or more attacks. For some people, after the first flare, dietary modifications alone are enough to prevent future attacks. Uric acid is produced from the natural breakdown of your body's cells and from the foods you eat.

Sugar-sweetened beverages—SSB’s as they’re known in public health circles—trigger surges in plasma uric acid levels, typically within minutes. While these are temporary, people who drink several soft drinks every day are putting themselves at increased risk for gout. Previous animal experiments14,29,30 and NHANES studies15,31 have suggested that the magnitude of the urate-increasing effect of fructose or sugar-sweetened sodas may be weaker among females than among males.
