While obesity and high blood pressure may increase the risk of gout, researchers recently have implicated soda, but not diet soda, as a possible gout trigger. They followed over 46,000 men aged 40 years and over with no history of gout. The men completed regular questionnaires on their intake of more than 130 foods and beverages, including sugar sweetened soft drinks and diet soft drinks, over a period of 12 years.

Conclusion: These findings from a nationally representative sample of US adults suggest that sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption is associated with serum uric acid levels and frequency of hyperuricemia, but diet soft drink consumption is not.

Starting with dietary changes, Greenberg said it’s all about avoiding specific foods that increase the uric acid level in the blood. An often overlooked gout-causing ingredient is fructose. High levels of uric acid in the blood can cause solid crystals to form within joints. Be honest with your doctor and nurses about your regular alcohol intake. Clear information on your alcohol intake can help your healthcare professionals advise you on your risk.

When it comes to ranking beverages best for our health, sugary drinks fall at the bottom of the list because they provide so many calories and virtually no other nutrients. People who drink sugary beverages do not feel as full as if they had eaten the same calories from solid food, and research indicates they also don’t compensate for the high caloric content of these beverages by eating less food. The average can of sugar-sweetened soda or fruit punch provides about 150 calories, almost all of them from added sugar. If you were to drink just one of these sugary drinks every day, and not cut back on calories elsewhere, you could gain up to 5 pounds in a year. Beyond weight gain, routinely drinking these sugar-loaded beverages can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic diseases.

As far as aspartame causing cancer, I’m not saying it isn’t possible but in lab tests, animals given around 5000 mg of aspartame each day, had a slightly higher risk of developing cancer. Diet Coke has about 150mg/240 ml, any increase in cancer risk is extremely minimal. Yes, gout is making an uncomfortable comeback in the U.S., actually doubling in the last few decades. If you always pictured gout as a disease of the Charles Dicken’s era, you’re not alone. It’s likely history buffs knew more about it than health nuts until now.

Since we’ve been talking a lot lately about methodology, it’s worth mentioning a few key components of this research. Though the study used self-report diet questionnaires, the large subject base and extensive time span are certainly compelling factors. As a merely interesting side note, the subjects were dentists, pharmacists and veterinarians, all professionals with a significant science based background and familiarity with research methodology. Scientists, though, need to do more research before you can get a definite answer.

I have tried Coldricine, Prednisone, Celebrex, Alieve and others. I do drink lots of carbonated water each day and my wife thinks I should stop that so I will as of today. But just curious as to any other relief you may offer. It seems to affect just my left elbow this time however in the past has been both. My doc has drained it to relieve the puffiness but it comes back to a large awkward looking state. You take both drugs while trying to get rid of painful inflammation from your attack and allopurinol to get your body’s uric acid levels lowered in order to remain low long term.

Consumption of soft drinks also had other concerns related to health issues. Because BVO degraded enzymatically in the same way as normal vegetable oils, more and more research brought out concerns on BVO. Their previous study had reported cardiac lesion presented in rats fed at high doses of BVO, but not in the control group that was fed unbrominated lipids. Myocardial cellular degeneration, edema and necrosis were also observed when BVO was fed. A person who consumed two to four BVO-containing soft drinks suffered headache, fatigue, ataxia, and memory loss that progressed over 30 days. These were symptoms of severe bromine (Bendig, Maier &Vetter, 2012).
