It’s these crystals that cause the pain and swelling associated with an attack of gout, as they build up around the joints and under the skin. Gout is a very painful condition and a typical gout attack usually develops over a two to three hour period and often resolves within two weeks. One study found that each additional serving of purine-rich red meat was associated with a 21 percent increase in the risk of gout in men over age 40. Your joints may benefit from limiting your red meat proteins, such as beef, lamb and pork, and replacing them with leaner options, like chicken or fish. Also, avoid organ and glandular meats, such as liver, kidney and sweetbreads, which also have high purine levels. Being overweight increases the risk of developing gout, and losing weight lowers the risk of gout.
Although some studies have shown that fruit juice can provoke gout attacks, this has not been supported by all research. Foods that commonly trigger gout attacks include organ meats, red meats, seafood, alcohol and beer. Purine intake from animal sources – such as red meat, organ meat, and various fish and shellfish—was shown to increase the likelihood of a recurrent gout attack by up to five times.
Is Whiskey good for gout?
Whisky has been found to have a property that decreases the serum uric acid level. Excretion of uric acid from blood is increased by 27% after drinking whisky. Conclusions: Moderate drinking of distilled liquors did not enhance serum uric acid level, blood glucose, or insulin level in healthy male subjects.
It does contain some purine, though, so consume in moderation. Black beans have been used as a treatment for gout in Taiwan for decades, but there is no research to back up this treatment. Black beans have the same antioxidant chemical that many berries have, but further research is needed. Salmon seems to be an exception, in that most gout sufferers don’t have a problem with it. Many wild game meats are known to be high in purines as well, such as venison, pheasant, quail, and rabbit.
