Uric acid stones are the second-most commonly formed kidney stones, behind calcium oxalate stones. If a patient has two attacks of gout within the same 12 months, it is generally recommended that they be treated with a medication to lower the uric acid, which colchicine does not accomplish. There is a rare effect on the nerves and muscles with long-term use of colchicine, and a blood test from the muscle is monitored at approximately six-month intervals in patients taking colchicine on a regular basis.

Treatment should continue for at least three months after uric acid levels fall below the target goal in those without tophi, and for six months in those with a history of tophi. Vegetables with high purine content showed no association with hyperuricemia but did show a negative association with gout risk. Coffee intake was negatively associated with gout risk, whereas it may be associated with increased hyperuricemia risk in women but decreased hyperuricemia risk in men . Some patients develop elevated levels of urate over 7.0 mg/dL without the symptoms of gout.
