Cherries, dairy products, coffee and vitamin C have shown benefits. Purines are found in many foods, and at different levels. They are metabolized into uric acid, a waste product that is usually excreted with urine. If there is too much uric acid in the blood, people can develop a condition called hyperuricemia. Fish, poultry, and other meat should be eaten in moderation to avoid gout attacks. Some nutritionists recommend four to six ounces a day of these foods.
It’s a good idea to drink lots of fluids -- 8 to 16 cups a day. Vitamin C also can help lower uric acid, but studies also show that the high fructose in OJ may boost uric acid levels, so drink it in moderation. Caffeinated coffee can cut uric acid, too, as long as you don’t overdo it. A gout diet isn't likely to lower the uric acid concentration in your blood enough to treat your gout without medication. Studies have shown that vegetables high in purines, such as asparagus and spinach, don't increase the risk of gout or recurring gout attacks.

During a flare, doctors will usually recommend that you abstain from alcohol entirely. Turkey and goose are higher in purines than other types of food, so it's best to avoid them. And gout-prone people should also keep their intake of wild game to a minimum.
We don’t recommend that you avoid vegetables all together, but some have higher purine content than others. Mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower, and asparagus are all high in purines. Eat these foods sparingly and fill your diet with other healthy veggies. To keep uric acid levels under control, start your day with a cup of green tea or lemon water.
