We computed person-time of follow-up for each participant from the return date of the 1984 questionnaire to the date of diagnosis of gout, death due to any cause, or the end of the study period , whichever came first. Increased Dietary Fructose Linked To Elevated Uric Acid Levels And Lower Liver Energy Stores
The highest expression of taurine enzymes are found in the straight tubes of the kidneys . Taurine has been shown to improve glucagon activity, promote glycaemic stability, improve insulin secretion and have a beneficial effect on insulin resistance. During the past few decades, the mean serum uric acid levels and the prevalence of hyperuricemia in the general population appear to have increased. The substantial increase in sugar-sweetened soft drinks and associated fructose consumption has also coincided with the secular trend of hyperuricemia and gout. Recently, several large-scale epidemiologic studies have clarified a number of these long-suspected risk factors in relation with hyperuricemia and gout. Furthermore, recent studies have illuminated the substantial comorbidities of hyperuricemia and gout, particularly metabolic-cardiovascular-renal conditions. As these data are scarce and the effects of allopurinol might not be limited to lowering serum uric acid levels, the potential causal role of uric acid on these outcomes remains to be clarified with further studies. Potential reasons behind these trends include the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome, western life-style factors, increased prevalence of medical conditions, and medication use that increase uric acid levels.

A recent prospective study of men found that sugar-sweetened sodas, fruit juices, and fructose were associated with a substantially increased risk of gout among men.13 To date, no other cohort study has investigated this relationship. The other pathway through which AMP can be degraded uses an enzyme, AMP kinase, or AMPK. Activation of AMPK actually leads to fat degradation, reduces insulin resistance, and decreases the production of glucose. This is how the common drug metformin works as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. A logistic regression procedure was used in the risk analysis to examine potential associations of dietary fructose , alcohol, and fiber on hyperuricemia.
Finally, a single report by Xu et al found that lowering uric acid with allopurinol could reduce hepatic steatosis in the desert sand rat . These studies are consistent with uric acid having a contributory role in hepatic steatosis by up-regulating fructokinase expression and fructose metabolism. Many experiments have shown that hyperuricemia may have a potential role in endothelial dysfunction and reduced NO bioavailability. However, several other studies have failed to demonstrate that an increase in blood UA levels can contribute to the onset of coronary and cardiovascular diseases.
Choi and colleagues looked for associations between sugar-sweetened drink intake and incident gout in about 79,000 participants who did not have known gout at baseline. Until recently, uric acid was only considered to be worrisome in the context of either kidney stones or gout. But, as is so often the case, nature is thrifty – multi-purposing various components of our physiology.
