My colleagues and I recently published a study in Arthritis Research & Therapy; we drew on a large national database in Taiwan, where the prevalence and incidence of end-stage renal disease are alarmingly high. Our study points out the need for physicians to routinely monitor kidney function in patients with gout. All individuals with ADTKD show slow loss of kidney function that may be present as early as childhood. Patients may first be diagnosed with this disease when they are found to have an elevated blood creatinine level on a routine blood test at their doctor’s office.
